Sixth Floor Museum releases amateur footage of JFK’s Dallas arrival

The Sixth Floor Museum announced Monday that it had obtained what is being called the best home movie known to exist of President Kennedys arrival in Dallas on the day he was assassinated. The previously unknown 8 millimeter color film shows the president and first lady, along with Vice President Lyndon Johnson and Texas Gov. John Connolly, arriving at Love Field on Nov. 22, 1963. Sixth Floor curator Gary Mack said the footage was captured by 15-year-old William Ward Warren. Students were given the day off from school for the presidents visit, and William took his camera to Love Field. He is now 61 and lives in North Texas with his family, Mack said. According to Mack, nearly all the color images of the president that day were taken by amateurs filming the trip. News photographers used black-and-white film at the time. The Sixth Floor museum said in a press release that Warren donated the film. Viewing this footage makes you feel as though you’re standing next to Warren as hes filming it on that very day, Mack said. Many believe their images captured on November 22, 1963 aren’t important because they dont show the assassination. The Sixth Floor Museum’s interest is preservation and hoping the images may help answer questions about the Kennedy visit in its entirety, not just the assassination.
