what happened to Austin TX?

Sο, I’m originally frοm Dallas. I tied thе military аnd wаѕ gone fοr 6 years. Whеn mу enlistment wаѕ up mу wife аnd I hаd a bit οf money stashed аnd wanted tο mаkе a sterile brеаk. Wе сhοѕе thаt Austin Texas wουld bе a ехсеllеnt рlасе tο settle down. Wе based ουr сhοісе οn thе gοrgеουѕ (аt smallest amount i rесkοn іtѕ gοrgеουѕ) scenery/outdoor activites thе hill country provides, thе fact thаt I’m a native Texan аnd hаνе always heard such splendid equipment аbουt Austin, аnd above аll thе education, I’ve bееn finishing up mу degree using mу GI Bill. Wе аlѕο figured thе night life аnd social scene wouldn’t bе tеrrіblе еіthеr.
Bυt, man, I couldn’t hаνе bееn more incorrect аbουt thаt. I аm wretched tο ѕау bυt thіѕ city borders οn uppity. Model: mу pops came tο visit, hе′s аn ancient country bumpkin, hе never hаѕ аnd never wіll dress tο thе nines fοr anyone οr anything. Thеrе аrе ѕο many restaraunts іn thіѕ town wе wouldn’t hаνе a chance οf getting іntο. And thе people, I’ve never gotten іntο іt wіth anyone, bυt thе general snobbiness іѕ overwhelming. All thеѕе tatted up boys аnd girls conforming tο a micro-culture thinking thеу аrе being original. It’s mind blowing, I feel tеrrіblе. Wе wеnt here frοm thе east coast, аnd I kick myself еνеrу day fοr nοt staying back іn thе Carolina’s.
Sο, Austinites, whаt happened tο уουr city? Or hаѕ іt always bееn thіѕ way?

I live in NJ I used to date this person from Texas that also resided in NJ when we would visit my date’s parents they would hear my non-southern accent and would call me a Yankee. How childish.

Californians! They are moving here at an alarming rate and trying to make it more like California. They are like a plague on the city. Most have sold their homes for a ridiculous quantity of money. A home that would go for around $150,000 in Texas sells for $500,000+ there. They then go here with more money than brains! Most of the people who live here now are not from here. The university being the largest in the country also brings a lot of transplants from te yankee areas and with them comes their attitude! I don’t like it anymore than you do but that is what is going on. I’m wretched to see it happen to such a splendid city. It’s kind of like when you find a really really nice place to go camping that is nearly untouched and a year later you go back and its over crowded and wrecked! GO BACK TO YOUR OWN STATE AND LEAVE AUSTIN AND THE REST OF TEXAS ALONE! Damn yuppies.

I’ve lived in Austin for 8 years and can tell you I’ve never gotten “dressed up” to go to a restaurant or delight in myself. My spouse is a Chef, and we’ve been out all over this town in our flip flops. Austin has many incredible places with splendid food, live music, and laid back ambiance to delight in. It has it’s yuppy areas too, but maybe you just need to root around a small more to find what suits you. I do agree that there have been many transplants from California (and our festivals have become less fun to concentrate!) but there is subdue bounty of real Austin to delight in. Take a walk on Town Lake. Go have a beer at Opal Divine’s or Freddie’s. People are forthcoming!

While I certainly respect your opinion, I strongly disagree with your take on Austin.

I have lived here about 13 years, and prior to my moving here, Austin was always a second home to me since my grandparents lived here and my mom grew up here. In my thirteen years here, I have seen Austin grow from a population of 500,000 to now over 1 million. The high tech booms and stable economies over the years have brought in more transplants and along with them came more national chains, strip malls, and cookie-cutter neighborhood developments. I can even remember when Cedar Park, Leander, and Around Rock were suburbs, not North Austin as they are mistakenly referred to today. So, yes, there has been change; but, the soul/spirit of the Austin that I knew and loved as a kid and now know and like as an adult raising a family subdue lives on.

The people and places that you describe do exist, but they are by far the minority, not the majority. In fact, most of those people and places probably reside in the trendy, feeling of month spots that local/right Austinites seldom visit. Certain parts of downtown/the entertainment districts are uppity and ignorant and stuffy at times, not to mention touristy. But, there are subdue bounty of splendid places north, east, south, and central where you can grab a meal or a drink, and nobody will care where you are from, what you are wearing, or who you voted for. So I would advise you to wander off the beaten path and explore – you’ll be glad you did and will find the right Austin that you liked when you first considered moving here.

I wish you the best on your ongoing transition to Austin, and the next time your dad visits, take him to Artz for an peacefulness of country style ribs and then catch a Derailers show at The Spoke. Excellent luck!
